Vienna State Opera

New Season, New Highlights

A quick look at the programs of Vienna’s opera and concert houses points towards new heights of musical perfection during the 2010/11 season.

The Vienna State Opera under new director Dominique Meyer will host six opera premieres in 2010/11. Three are scheduled for the fall program: Paul Hindemith's Cardillac (Oct 17), Georg Friedrich Handel's Alcina (Nov 14) and Mozart's Don Giovanni (Dec 11). Mozart's Marriage of Figaro (Feb 16), Gaetano Donizetti's Anna Bolena (Apr 2) and Leos Janácek's Kátja Kabanová (Jul 17) will follow in the new year. Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia will play on October 10. In September and October 2010 selected performances will be shown live on the big screen next to the State Opera House.

The new season at the Volksoper will feature nine premiers, one revival, returns of a further four productions and 22 repertoire works. Among the highlights are new productions of popular musical Hello, Dolly! and Franz Lehár's much loved operetta the Merry Widow, and a salute to Volksoper legend Peter Minich. The Theater an der Wien's fifth season will bring international highlights and 12 premieres to Vienna, including absorbing operas by Georg Friedrich Handel, Richard Strauss, Kurt Weill, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Benjamin Britten and Francis Poulenc, and the European premiere of a work by Daniel Catán.

Visitors to the Konzerthaus have the pick of some 430 events representing a host of musical genres, literature and film. A new concert cycle is devoted to music of the modern era, while there will be a series of appearances by virtuoso pianist András Schiff, and the Konzerthaus will mark the Gustav Mahler anniversary years in 2010/11 with performances of all his symphonies. The Musikverein will get the 2010/11 season underway with a Schumann cycle performed by the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester under chief conductor Riccardo Chailly. Other big name guest performers include Riccardo Muti and his Orchestra Cherubini, Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, while Daniel Barenboim and Mariss Jansons will each conduct two orchestras.
